higher newfield edge

The site is located within the Ribble Valley Open Countryside. Our clients currently live on the site in a 3-bedroom end terrace however their property no longer works for how they want to live. The proposal replaces the dwelling with a high quality detached futureproofed home suited for contemporary living.

Our clients love their site and garden which experiences the most magnificent hillside views across the Ribble Valley. However, they wanted to improve their home to future-proof the property for themselves, their family, and create an outstanding family home with everything they could want from a property.

The clients required a significant uplift of accommodation which far exceeded the policy limit for an extension, the proposed design replaces their existing property with a 3-storey detached dwelling which references their original property but incorporates contemporary features, and meets the highest levels of sustainability.

The new dwelling has been re-positioned to connect to their existing garden which is located at first floor level. The property is an ‘upside-down house’ with the living spaces on the middle floor connecting to the existing high-level garden, the design includes a hidden courtyard with the swimming pool, gym, bar, living spaces and office wrapping round the courtyard. Various different outdoor terraces have been incorporated to allow the clients to blend indoor / outdoor living despite the weather.

“The site is within a remote area of open countryside, though outside the AONB. On plan the replacement Higher Newfield Edge appears large, but a proportion of the ground floor will be subterranean with a grass roof, and whilst modern the frontage will be fairly modest in its design and respect the vernacular. It is considered that overall, the impact will not be significant or harmful. Following discussions with the architect, visualisations were provided which demonstrate the impact and it is considered that it will not have a detrimental impact on the landscape and the replacement dwelling will incorporate various eco-friendly design features.”
