An existing 3-storey detached dwelling with an old cottage out-building identified as a Non-Designated Heritage Asset. The brief was to re-design the existing property to work for their family of 3 children who are all under the age of 7, and to include an annexe for their elderly parents. The property is located in the Bury greenbelt and the clients wanted to utilise the existing out-building to integrate with the main house and connect via a glazed link.
The design sensitively re-builds the derelict cottage, and attaches to the main house whilst re-configuring the layout to improve the connection to the upper level garden. The new layout is now an ‘upside down house’ with the bedrooms located on the ground floor, the living accommodation on the first floor and 2 offices for the parents on the top floor. The first floor level includes an open plan kitchen dining living space and a children’s playroom. This level benefits from direct access to the main garden space, and a large balcony terrace with views of the surrounding countryside.
