pasturegate house

The site is located in the Pendle Open Countryside, and is located outside of the settlement boundary on the site of a riding menage. The site is orientated with the primary sunlight located towards the road with a North-facing garden and view.

The site is also located adjacent to a Non-Designated Heritage Asset, therefore the proposal needs to sensitively address both the Open Countryside, the adjacent property, and maximise natural light.

The client required a large 5-bedroom property which includes a health and leisure suite, a home studio and office for working from home, and a large garage. However, it was important to minimise visibility and scale due to the Open Countryside location.

The proposal translates the traditional features of the adjacent property, into a contemporary, sustainable response to the site. The solution included creating a South-facing courtyard, and orientating the entrance to the side with a new access lane, the property then benefits from both natural light and outward views with various external spaces.

“It's nice when a planning application comes before us when it's the right house for the plot, and it's down to the architect's skills. The design feels right, successfully bridging the gap with an interesting design, peeping pleasantly. An aspirational house for Barrowford!”
