PASTUREGATE HOUSE
OPEN COUNTRYSIDE

CONNECTING natual light with RURAL VIEWS and exceptional SPACES
THE site
The site is located in the Pendle Open Countryside, and is located outside of the settlement boundary on the site of a riding menage. The site is orientated with the primary sunlight located towards the road with a North-facing garden and view.
The site is also located adjacent to a Non-Designated Heritage Asset, therefore the proposal needs to sensitively address both the Open Countryside, the adjacent property, and maximise natural light.

an ASPIRATIONAL home, perfect for ENTERTAINING

THE brief
The client required a large 5-bedroom property perfect for entertaining, which included a swimming pool, health and leisure suite, a design studio for working from home, a games room, a large garage, and long driveway entrance. However, it was important to minimise visibility and scale due to the Open Countryside location.
THE solution
The proposal translates the traditional features of the adjacent Non-Designated Heritage Asset, into a contemporary, sustainable response to the site. To achieve both natural light and outward views on an otherwise North-facing site, the solution included creating a South-facing courtyard, and orientating the entrance to the side with a new access lane through the adjacent field. This allows the open plan kitchen, dining living space, and leisure accommodation to simultaneously benefit from South light and North countryside views. The property was also carefully sited to ensure the new dwelling was screened from view and the large new dwelling did not dwarf the adjacent Non-Designated Heritage Asset.

COMMITTEE Councillor
“It's nice when a planning application comes before us when it's the right house for the plot, and it's down to the architect's skills. The design feels right, successfully bridging the gap with an interesting design, peeping pleasantly. An aspirational house for Barrowford!”
