NESTLED in the GREEN BELT, SURROUNDED by woodland

LABC Building Excellence Awards 2024

Highly Commended

THE site

The site is located in the Green Belt, surrounded by a dense woodland, located adjacent to a biological heritage site, and a small orchard in the centre, all of which needed to be retained and unaffected. The site is orientated with the primary sunlight located towards the road and entrance rather than the view or garden, and there was a volume limit on the site limited to a 3-bedroom bungalow with a pitched roof.

THE brief

The clients required a large 4-bedroom forever home with dog room, garage and large open plan living spaces. The design needed to avoid all of the root protection areas of the trees, whilst maintaining a front elevation to the main road, and simultaneously ensuring that afternoon and evening sunlight can be achieved on an otherwise North-facing garden and site which is heavily shaded.

THE solution

To achieve the above, we used our 3D modelling software and inserted every existing tree at the correct height along with the existing site topography to analyse the sunlight at different times of the day, and in each season to assess where sunlight is achieved across the site.

The proposed design meanders around the root protection areas, to ensure that natural sunlight can be achieved within the primary living spaces and external seating areas at the correct time of day. The property is highly sustainable, maximises natural light, and worked with the natural gradient of the site by including a split level layout.

CLIENT Testimonial

"We have spent more time sat outside in the first few weeks than we did in our old house in the last 3 years! The way the house connects to the garden has literally changed the way we live. Each morning and evening we sit and look out over the trees and the roof overhangs allow us to sit out in the rain. The house is literally everything we could have wished for and more!”
